One Temple, One Book – Caste: The Origins of our Discontents, by Isabel Wilkerson
Sunday, May 16 // Erev Shavuot
7:00 – 7:30 – Shavuot Service
7:30 – 8:30 – Discussion of Caste
We invite you to join us on Erev Shavuot for a One Temple, One Book discussion of Caste: The Origins of our Discontents, by Isabel Wilkerson. Over the past three years, B’nai Israel has engaged in serious learning and discussions around issues of race and racism in our country. Caste continues that learning by examining Wilkerson’s extensive research on human-designed caste systems in India, Nazi Germany, and right here in the United States. Caste is a #1 New York Times Bestseller, an Oprah’s Book Club pick, and on the National Book Award longlist.
We will begin at 7:00 p.m. with a short Erev Shavuot service, followed by a discussion of the book in small groups. The event will take place outside, and we will ask that participants wear masks and physically distance, following all COVID-19 safety measures. You also have the option of participating over Zoom. See Hashavua for the Zoom link.
You can purchase the book at Amazon.com or at your local bookseller. We look forward to seeing you there.
